Audio Technica AT4033 Condenser Microphone Review

AT4033 Microphone Review

The AT4033s seam to have a low mid bump which can thicken up a source that seams a little thin. I've used them with great results on guitar amps that I thought needed a tad more low mids. At the same time their high end is pretty damn bright in certain spots. This high end can be great or it can be dead wrong. It depends on the voice you are recording (when it comes to vocals) and it depends on the cymbals the drummer is using (when it comes to drum overheads).

Normally, I'm not big on mics with a boosted low mid on toms as I'm usually eqing the low mids out of the toms, but for some reason these faired pretty well on toms the few times I've used them.

The Audio Technica 4033 is not the most versatile condenser in the world. It's not the most used that I have. However, it has a distinctive sound. Character is everything. If it works on the source you are recording, it probably works well. If it doesn't work, it' will probably sound really shitty. I guess this is the case with all mics, but this concept seams to be stronger with the AT 4033 than with other mics.

The strongest trait of the AT4033 is it's price. These things are so damn cheap these days that it would be silly not to pick up a pair for your home recording studio.

The weakest trait of the AT4033 is it's shockmount. They tear up quickly. They use cheap rubber bands, and I know of know way to replace the rubber bands. A replacement shockmount is about as much as the used cost of the mic. I've had to get creative a couple of times and use a sock coupled with an mic clip for a SM 57.

I've had great luck with the AT4033 on female vocals.  In fact, on one particular voice, I don't think any mic could have beaten it.  It sounded perfect.  In fact, this was the only time I thought that any vocal sound of mine was ever perfect.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the AT4033 to anyone wanting to develop a comprehensive mic collection. For the price, it's tough to beat. On the right source, it's tough to beat with any mic.
