Is TAXI Right For You?

Is TAXI right for you?

To start off, in a nutshell, the odds that you are talented enough to move up to the next level are slim. Take a look at your local music scene. How many of these bands would you put $20,000 of your money into to pay for recording? How many of these bands would you sell your house to pay for their recording and marketing? If none jump to mind, you are not alone. The bottom line is that most people do not have a shot in hell of becoming the next U2 or Matchbox 20. In fact, an extremely small percentage of bands actually go for the radio sound anyway.

TAXI in a lot of ways is like a microphone or even a recording studio. It's only as good as the source that you put into it. Most of you know that you'll never get a great tone with a crappy instrument and a great microphone. You must have a great source for the mic to pick up. In fact, you are probably better with a crappy mic and a great instrument. A recording studio will never sound great if it's recording crappy bands. A recording studio needs great bands to sound great. Taxi is the exact same way. If you have an unbelievable batch of songs that are well recorded, I'm convinced that TAXI can get your music into the hands of the big boys. Someone will jump. Why? Because that is what TAXI gets paid to do. What??

From what I gather, TAXI is providing a service to it's clients. Yes, it's clients are the people submitting the songs to a degree, but it's real clients are filmmakers, commercials, TV shows, etc. A given TV producer will approach TAXI about finding a song. It's my understanding that it is now TAXI's job to find the perfect song for this TV producer. If TAXI can't find it, they don't get paid from the TV producer.

If TAXI didn't charge a membership fee, everyone under the son would be submitting their songs. This is why every music forum on the planet has posts about TAXI. No one wants to just jump into a $300 per year deal. It would be stupid to jump into that. If it was free, I would have submitted 1000 songs already.

So does TAXI work? I think there is no doubt that TAXI words. Turn on your rock or pop radio station. Crossfade is all over the place. If you have what the people with the $$$ are looking for, TAXI can make that connection happen. There are no guarantees on the deal. The band should be supplying the guarantees. If the band has songs that EVERYONE is confident about being smash hits, you may make a label feel the same way.

There have been people who feel that their music is truly something special. When no one bites on their music, these people get upset. They say things like ?I deserve this? or ?I deserve that?. This attitude will get you nowhere. Since the competition is so high, actually getting a song placed by TAXI is amazing. Not because of TAXI, but because the of the huge number of submissions and the low number of actual jobs.

Another issue with TAXI is the jobs themselves. A beer company may be looking for a country rock band for some modern cowboy commercial. If you don't have enough country in your song, it won't work with the cowboy. Even if your song is great, it won't get picked simply because it doesn't fit what the producer of the commercial is looking for. There were a number of unhappy people who said that their songs were rejected because they didn't fit what the producer was looking for. Think about it. You need a song for the hot love scene in a movie. Chances are strong that your favorite 20 songs wouldn't fit this part. You need a ?Take My Breath Away? (Berlin) or something similar. If you song is too happy or too sad, it just won't work for that given job. It has nothing to do with the quality of the song, but more of the aesthetics of the song.

I think that TAXI is an extremely powerful service for getting your music into the hands of the right people. Stars will be made from TAXI's service. I have no doubt of that. However, TAXI will not polish a turd. If you are overconfident about your music, you will be upset by TAXI. If your music is totally marketable, TAXI may be right for you. If your music does not fit into a commercial setting, TAXI probably won't be doing a whole lot for you.

I hope this help.

Ridiculous boilerplate written by some TAXI shill: much of it from their corporate materials. Don't be confused: publishers and labels are not their clients nor a source of revenue to TAXI. They only get paid as long as they can keep you in casino, pulling the lever. Your personal success is of little consequence to their company. Lastly, as a matter personal management, you should never let anybody tell you "no" that can't tell you "yes". They can't tell you "yes" but can tell you "no".

If you want constructive criticism for your original music to get it ready for prime time, post it on Bash This Recording. Caring people of various levels of experience and backgrounds will endeavor to help you improve, not pathetic vague rubber stamp reasons why they are going to sh*tcan your submission. Ever better, the Forum will not charge you an annual fee of $300 plus $5 per submitted song.
