Nashville's Elite Recording Studio

Getting A Tour of The Nashville Recording World

After being locked in Wireworld Studios for 5 days, we decided to take a field trip. At first, I was a little leery about leaving the studio for a day because I was trying to jam in as much music recording knowledge as possible in the short 9 day period we had. Well, I can say that our trips to Blackbird Studios, Korby Microphones, and Independent Mastering were well worth the day spent.

Everyone Kisses Your Ass

One thing I noticed is that when I go places with Wagener, I get way better treatment than I normally would. Wherever we went, people seamed happy to see us (accept for maybe a few waitresses, but that was usually my fault). Everyone mentioned bent over backwards to help us out and I'd like to thank all of them for taking time out of their busy day.

Nashville Highlights

This particular day was truly amazing. Just getting to be in this environment was a tremendous experience for me. You'll read about our tour of the Korby Microphone facility. You'll read about the guys at Independent Mastering. You'll see a half assed online tour of Blackbird Studios and their enormous rental facility.

Amazing Lunch

In the middle of the day after all of our running around, we got to sit down and eat lunch with Bob Ohlson (engineered at Motown) and some hyper guy who produced a Black Crowes record. I must say that it was a drastic departure from the though processes that usually occur back in my hometown in Southeast Missouri. Just hearing how these guys think and talk is so different. Big boys how have succeeded at what they love doing are exiting to be around...and they sure have their share of stories.

Independent Mastering

It was a real treat visiting Independent Mastering. They have quite an impressive wall covered in hit records that includes Garth Brooks and George Strait. Their website says they worked on 4 projects that were nominated for Grammy Awards. ? I'm not a mega country fan, but it's not hard to respect the talents that these guys have. We met both owners / mastering engineers, Eric Conn and Don Cobb. They were quiet guys, but very friendly and obviously very knowledgeable. If I remember correctly, Wagener said he's been using these guys for years.

I thought it was really cool that these guys offer pricepoints to fit any budget. I plan on sending my biggest projects to Independent Mastering. You see, the big boys just take longer. Their hourly fees basically stay the same. This allows them to do smaller, faster projects for bands on budgets when they are not mastering for Garth Brooks.
