While I've gotten a chance to sparingly use Cubase VST 5.0 this past month, I've not even gotten close to learning what this program can really do (even if is 5 years old). I've been making little 30 second creations that just sound like bad cell commercials or whatever. I've found that I do learn quite a bit when I'm making my own music, however it's not like a day of recording someone else.
I've been a Vegas user for about 5 years now. I know it like the back of my hand. When I use it, I don't feel like I'm using software. I feel like I'm making (or at least messing with) music. I don't feel like I'm on a PC, for example. I feel like I'm just recording.
Well, I broke my comfortable mold today and forced myself to use Cubase VST on a real session. I hadn't hit record on a audio file (as in a .wav file) in 5 years. I had just done a little goofing around with the sequencer. I didn't know how to edit files. I didn't know how to align files that weren't in sync. I didn't know if you could record a midi track and a couple .wav files at the same time. I didn't even know that you could punch in and out with Cubase. Well, today I learned all that and a ton more. I must say that it was quite a bit more stressful than playing it safe with Vegas, but my Cubase knowledge has grown at an alarming rate!
Record Other People While Learning Your Recording Software
So, if you have a situation where you can make someone else put up with your recording software ignorance, I highly recommend you come over, give them a deal, and then make them put up with your recording software incompetence. You'll be amazed at how much more you learn when you can't back out and be lazy. It's the best audio software tutorial on the planet. When you can't compromise, you will rise to the occasion and beat the software.
