Where I need help is sorting out the question of pre-amps. I understand that they make a huge difference in the end result.

This is the number one reason I started RecordingReview.com. I was also told I NEEDED to dump $1k+ into each channel before I could get "great" sounding recordings. This is a complete farse.

Anyone who suggests that preamps make a "huge" difference is either flat out lieing, has a totally different definition of "huge" than the rest of the world, or is so high up in the chain that the tiniest, minute differences end up making a "huge" difference to them. The rest of the world says "but I don't hear a difference. Am I inferior?"

Don't listen to me. Instead, listen to the preamp shootouts I've done in the member area. Then let me know if you think they make a huge difference. http://forum.recordingreview.com/f18/

I'm new to home recording, but have done some recording in a first rate studio here in the DC area in the past. As I decided to pull together my gear, I decided to go with an analog board as I found it more intuitive to us. I will be running this into a MacPro and protools LE, via some interface devices. I have a pretty decent collection of mics including a few AV condensor mics (I suspect I will get to a point that a Neuman or equiv will be desired). For starting I think the AV will do the trick for the vocals. Where I need help is sorting out the question of pre-amps. I understand that they make a huge difference in the end result. I certainly want good results, but the range of prices is huge and I don't want to go crazy unneccessarily. Any suggestions??

This article really hits home and should be read by ALL those looking at ameteur/semio-professional recording.

We ALL can fall prey to the marketing of of these companies/articles/catalogues in looking for that magic bullet to fix hard work and experimentation with the gear that you already have and/or can afford.

I have experimented with this gear snobbery thing and had some fun in the process.

I was system engineer for a rather large/well known act and I deliberately stuck a Yamaha 31 band GEQ at front of house. After the bands touring engineer (Very well respected and knowledgeable guy) had tinkered during sound check, he suggested that a Klarke graphic would make a huge improvement to the sound of my line array.
I own a Klarke DN360 that had flamed out several years ago so, just for fun, I put the insides of a Yamaha GEQ, into the Klarke case. It looks and feels just like the original KT, until you pop the lid.

I swapped the Yamaha for the "Klarke" and he was ecstatic.

"That's better....you can really hear the depth now"

I did not have the heart to tell him that I had actually replaced a Yamaha GEQ with a lesser model Yamaha GEQ!
