"The plug compressor is only able to follow the audio curve and compress it along the curve. Hardware compressor works with the curve."

What the heck does this mean?

Even the so called best plugins such as the SSL 400 don't come eve close to for example cheap Alesis 3060. You can make the Alesis work and dance with the music with only a basic seting and controll the compression and behaviour by using (analog) EQ and preamp in front of it. Try that with any plugin and the plugin will fall appart. The plug compressor is only able to follow the audio curve and compress it along the curve. Hardware compressor works with the curve.
Yes the big boys do use plugin compressor but only on parts of tracks that aren't prominent in the audio. A good studio would never ever master with plugins. I've been in busines for 25 years and wouldn't swap all the most expensive plugins even for a crappy 266XL.
