So you've decided that you want to become a professional sound engineer. You have a tough road ahead of you. I'd love to tell you that sound engineering is a very rewarding career that pays well and allows you to live a fulfilling personal life. That would be a lie. The fact is there are simply aren't the audio engineering gigs there used to be. This doesn't mean it can not be done, it just means the world is shifting that the demands for high paying audio engineer gigs have gone down.
To become a professional sound engineer in a big recording studio LINK (recently put on the endangered species list) you've got to find a way to get your foot in the door. This isn't necessarily easy. It's fairly standard that all you have to do is go to recording school, apply for an internship, and you'll be on your way to Grammy awards and platinum recordings. While this may have happened it's certainly the exception here in sound engineer reality land.
Don't take my word for it. I'm not trying to scare you away from recording schools LINK. I'm trying to get you thinking about questions you ask recording schools you make them interview for your money! Ask them how many of their graduates from the past 5 years are making a decent income (“decent” means whatever you want it to mean) in the audio industry. The truth is it's not nearly as high as the ads in the fancy recording magazines are let on.
